Three or four times a year during the summer the castle here in Heidelberg is illuminated and there are fireworks in the evening. Can you believe I have yet to witness this spectacle? And I have been living here 4.5 years! I wanted to go tonight, but the weather was really crappy today so I decided not to go. The next one is in mid-July, and I will try to go then. There is a third but that is in September and I won’t be here any more. So if I do want to go, I need to do it next time.

I had my ENT appointment on Tuesday, and he prescribed me another medication (a prescription-only one), Aerius, and I have been better since, but I am not sure if that is the medication or just the (more allergy-friendly) weather. I still have my cough that I have had for over a week now, though. But it has gotten better in the past few days so I hope it will be gone soon. I have to go back for another appointment in three weeks when my prescription runs out, and we will see if the new medication helps me or not, and then decide if I stay on it or try yet another.

Yesterday and today I have bought a few books after work. I have no idea when I will actually read them, because I have so many books already that are waiting to be read, but I wanted to get these, so I figured I might as well get them now (while I still get that discount at work, hehe). I got Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut (which I have already started reading), Runaway by Alice Munro, What I Loved by Siri Hustvedt, A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon, A Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, and For One More Day by Mitch Albom. And I ordered Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig which I will pick up on Monday. I also still have some books to read that I got from the library a few weeks ago, so I will definitely not run out of reading material any time soon. I just love books & reading!

On Wednesday I saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3 at the movies in Mannheim with Caley. It was good, though not as good as the first or the second. There was a lot more action, and less comedy, and I missed that a little. But it was still a good movie.

Tonight I got a message from a childhood friend of mine on lokalisten. We were friends during elementary school, but lost touch as we went to separate schools after 4th grade. We sent messages back and forth for some time, and we want to meet up when I am in Munich again. It is funny because I remember trying to find her on StudiVZ [German Facebook] not too long ago, maybe a couple of weeks, but I didn’t find her. I don’t know why I did not think of finding her on lokalisten. This prompted me to look up my best friend during elementary school and I found her as well. I sent her a message, and I hope she remembers me and will get back in touch. This would be really exciting. We have all gone very different paths, and have different lives now [the friend who contacted me today is getting married in two months!] so I wonder if we will still get along, and have something to talk about and mutual interests, but we were good friends when we were little, so I hope we will still get along now. Sometimes I wish I had tried harder to stay in touch with them after I moved, but I guess that is the past, and there is nothing to change about that. The future is what lies ahead, and thanks to the internet we found each other again.

The castle lit up sounds beautiful!

I’ve read A Handmaid’s Tale, it’s very.. interesting! You either love it or you hate it.

Ahhhh, yeah I know someone on my LJ friends list read it and loved it. What about you? You don’t sound so thrilled… ;) But I guess either way it is a major work of literature, so reading it will definitely be a good idea. Another of Atwood’s books is actually on the list of suggested reading for my major. So is a book by Munro. Lately I have been trying to select my reading to be semi-pleasure and work, because I cannot afford to waste so much time on “trashy” novels.

Oh, it’s not bad! It just wasn’t what I expected.. a good read though.

Have you read ‘The Historian’? It’s a great book!

No I haven’t. Who wrote it?

Let me know what you think about “What I loved”. I only read a couple of pages, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Hope your new prescription-meds help with the allergies. And on the friendship-thing: I have found many old friends through the internet and I think it’ll be fun for you to meet up with your old friends!

It’s written by Elizabeth Kostova - it’s a historical drama, excellent storytelling, suspense.. is just a great read!

My girlfriend read “A Spot of Bother” by Mark Haddon a few weeks ago and she loved it. I read a few pages when she brought it home and I was instantly impressed. It’s definitely on my reading list as well.

  8. [...] to hand it in when I come back to Heidelberg on Thursday. Tuesday I want to meet up with Bettina, one of the childhood friends I recently reconnected with, and in the evening I am going out for drinks with a few friends for a late birthday celebration. [...]
