If you ask me where I am from, I will tell you without hesitation that I am from Munich. Munich is where I grew up, where my family lives, where my roots are.
Originally my family’s roots are elsewhere, though.
My dad comes from Goslar in the Harz mountain range. While we did go there on vacation frequently, when I was younger, I never really felt at home there.
My mom was born in Munich, but her parents originally come from East Prussia and Silesia. I do not really feel related to neither East Prussia nor Silesia, though. I know very little about this part of my family.
My current home is in Heidelberg, and I do feel like I belong here. I have lived here since October 2002 (08/04 - 10/05 excepted) and my life is here. My apartment is here, my friends are here, I go to university here. I enjoy living and studying here.
I have roots, but they do not keep me rooted in one place. I want to discover many more places, move to another city, to another country again; knowing that I will be able to return to my roots when I feel the need to.
Munich is still where home is, where my roots are. The way I feel about Munich is incomparable to any other city in Germany or the world; I am and will always be a Münchner Kindl and a proud Bavarian who does not like beer and does not know how to speak Bavarian.

I liked this very much- some roots travel and they are all the stronger for it!
I can relate to what you say very well, both in terms of how it reflects my own experiences and because I know the area of germany you’re talking about. I liked Heidelberg a lot when I visited it!
Nice to see someone so proud of where she is from!
Thanks to all of you for your comments!
